“Stage of Fools"

Here cometh April again, and as far as I can see the world hath more fools in it than ever.
— Charles Lamb

I have never been a big fan of April Fool’s Day. Pulling pranks on others is usually not funny or clever. A “Kick Me” sign is not humorous, it’s just stupid. In fact, I don’t like most surprises. They do not fit into my general personality. Let me know and I will invite you in, make you dinner, and shower you will midwest hospitality. Jump out at me, you’ll probably receive a slap in the face.

Another reason I don’t enjoy April Fool’s is because lately it seems as though every day is April Fool’s. Just look around. Gawk at the news. Glance upon some of the candidates running for office. See our obsession with celebrity. Behold humans walking around with hunched backs and faces hypnotized by tiny glowing instruments. Examine the behavior. Gape at what passes as fashion. Study what is preached from some pulpits (and state governments) is really hate and bigotry. Peer into the psyche of many humans and you will be truly terrorized.

Are we all just fools biding our time on this big blue ball? Is it futile to fight? Can we combat the ignorance, the apathy, the bitter cold of contempt and derision? Sometimes I am aghast at the depravity. Why do we hate, hurt, maim, kill, criticize, and bully? Are we so lost that we can’t find the light?

But then I step back and think of the goodness, the beauty, the true hearts who make this world magnificent.

So, on this day of fools I challenge you to walk the honorable path. Look beyond the asses and buffoons and dopes. Stand tall. Be a harbinger of hope. Make April 1 a day of grace. Share love, not “Kick me” signs. The world will thank you.

When we are born we cry that we are come to this great stage of fools.
