Every Moment

Every moment and every event of every man’s life on earth plants something in his soul.
— Thomas Merton

Our lives are built upon moments. Each moment creates a chain that frames our essence, our being, our light. The joy, the sorrow, the grief, the simple routines carve out who we are and what we give to the world.

I am a bundle of moments. My innocent little brown-eyed girl has merged with a wiser, slightly gray-haired woman who has managed to navigate love, loss, despair, hilarity, and daily challenges with some amount of awkward grace. I have made mistakes. God, I have made mistakes, but I have also created beauty and miracles and magic.

This is what I know. This is what is in my heart. I breathe. I turn my face toward the sun. I am grateful for fresh coffee, my husband’s kisses, moments spent giggling with my grandchildren, a favorite song on the radio, wine with dinner, a surprise text from an old friend, my sister’s laugh, a warm pie waiting to be cut, books (always books), and each incredible moment I am allowed to walk this earth.

Each of us has our own moments, our own stories. We can choose to wonder at the unique beauty of each of those moments. Sadness teaches patience. Joy gives clarity. Hardships develop strength. Grief opens our hearts. Every twinkling day creates simple bliss.

Look inward. See the past for what it was. Plan adventures for the future. Live in the blessed present. Accept sorrow. Be thankful for happiness. Plant grand and glorious moments in your soul.

What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside of you.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
