The new year is a clean slate. We brush aside last year’s woes and instead focus on what may be. We set goals and commitments and resolutions. The new year is an unwritten journal, full of empty pages ready to fill with good intentions.
Yesterday I made a list. I call it my “wills.” I will eat healthy and exercise. I will write every day. I will meditate every day. I will complete my first shitty rough draft of my book. I will continue to read and learn and work my mind. I will work my heart to show kindness and love and joy. Pretty simple, huh? This morning, though, as I sat down to write in my journal, I realized I had already missed a few of things. But here is the thing, I have decided that instead of concentrating on what resolutions I don’t fulfill, which is really just regrets, I am going to focus on what I did accomplish.
I did take a walk. I did take down Christmas. I did read. I did begin the task of decluttering. I did whip up a New Year’s meal of black eyed peas, collard greens, and corn cakes. I did begin the new year with love and hope and raucous laughter.
It is good to have commitments. It makes us accountable, but it doesn’t help our psyches to beat ourselves up when we fall, because, damnit, we will…consistently. This year join me in making a promise to focus on “I will and I did” instead of “I missed and I forgot.” Your heart will thank you.
