August 3 & Pie #17: I Remembered the Blueberries

Pie #17: Blueberry Stars

This pie is a repeat from June, but I had a two pint container of blueberries in the refrigerator and my family was having an impromptu lunch at my sister's house. So, I volunteered to whip up this pie for everyone AND I didn't have to make a trip to the store for supplies. Win. Win.

Since I made the commitment to blog every day for Blogher on the subject of memory, I looked up the cognitive benefits of blueberries. According to whfoods.org, these little super fruits are chocked full of antioxidants and fight the free radicals that damage our cells. This article also referred to a study that had older adults consume up to 2 1/2 cups of berries a day in juice form for 12 weeks. The researchers found that the participants' cognitive function improved over this three month period. The study concluded that blueberries might improve memory and may also slow down or postpone the cognitive problems of the aged.

Now....if you add butter-filled pie crust and sugar to the blueberries, will the results still be the same? Sounds like grounds for another study. I will volunteer to bake the pies.
