You Are So Much More Than Pretty

Pretty (according to Google):
     1. attractive in a delicate way without being truly beautiful or handsome
     2. an attractive thing, typically a pleasing but unnecessary accessory

We women are often judged on our “prettiness." We spend thousands of dollars a year on makeup and hair color and clothes to improve our physical appearances. We can live for days on just one compliment about our looks, but pretty should not be our end goal. Whenever I hear someone say to a young girl, “You are pretty," I want to say, “You are so much more than pretty.” You are smart and strong and creative, yet our society seems to value the physical above all else. Is that it? Is pretty all we have? I say no. We have a tremendous cache of weaponry in our feminine arsenal.

To the young women in my life, here are a few things I want you to remember the next time someone says, “You’re pretty.”

You are fierce. You are loyal to your close friends and family. You gather them around you. You honor your connections.

You are brave. You try new things. You are not afraid to fall on your face.

You are full of grace. You walk life with true style and even when you stumble you know how to rise with dignity.

You believe in the strength and goodness of others. You give to charities. You volunteer your time. You are truly kind.

You are a warrior princess. You are made of steel. Your heart is a beating drum.

You are an individual. You are not like all the others. You see yourself as the unique soul you are.

You are creative. You write, draw, stitch, and dance the songs in your heart. You add color to the world around you.

You are curious. You demand answers. You seek the truth.

You believe in magic. You see mermaids and fairies and sprites in every new moon. There is light in your spirit.

You watch and emulate the strong women in your life. You are the embodiment of all the women who came before you and all who will walk this earth after you are gone.

So dance in the rain. Sing in the streets. Roar at injustice. Twirl in the light. Sit in peace. Believe in your own power. Love with abandon. Embrace your own quirky, fabulous, wonderful, odd, unique feminine are so much more than pretty.
